Video Notes is not showing on YouTube
- Open a regular YouTube watch page, not the homepage, Shorts feed, or an embedded player.
- Reload the YouTube tab after installing or updating the extension.
- Open Video Notes, choose Settings, and confirm “Enable video notes” is on.
- Check that the extension is allowed to run on YouTube in your browser’s extension settings.
Keyboard shortcuts
- Alt + N on Windows/Linux or Option + N on macOS — add a timestamped note.
- Alt + A on Windows/Linux or Option + A on macOS — draw on the current frame.
- Ctrl/Cmd + Enter — save the note and resume playback.
If another app captures a shortcut, use the Add note or Annotate button below the YouTube player.
Back up or restore your library
Open the Video Notes popup, choose Settings, then use Export notes to download a JSON backup. Use Import notes to merge that backup into another browser profile or device.
Notes are stored locally and are not automatically synchronized between browsers.
Sharing or flashcards are not working
Sharing needs an internet connection and creates a read-only link that expires after 90 days. Flashcards are optional and need your own Gemini API key plus at least six useful notes.
Your normal notes and drawings remain local even if either optional service is unavailable.
Still stuck?
Open a GitHub support issue with your browser name, extension version, what you expected, and what happened. Do not include private notes, API keys, or sensitive screenshots.
